Many castle was built in Sengoku era.
This is Hamamatsu castle in Hamamatsu city Shizuoka. This Castle is known Ieyasu Tokugawa lived in 29~45 years old.
About 17 years, it is long. Why Ieyasu lived there long time ?
To expand his territory, and to defense there from Takeda.
After Battle of Okehazama(1560), Ieyasu was independence from Imagawa and formed alliance with Nobunaga Oda. After that, he expanded his territory from Mikawa Aichi ~ Totomi Shizuoka. He occupied this castle in1568, and made it home base since 1570~1586. This castle based on hill, and behind was marsh and rice field.
Looks like practical fort.
In this time, the castle had not Ishigaki and Tenshu.
In 1572, Shingen Takeda began to attack Nobunaga and Ieyasu territory. Shingen loaded main corps himself, and Ieyasu. In this time, Takeda had 27,000 soldiers, Tokugawa 12,000.
Takeda’s army was one the one strongest, Ieyasu’s castle were occupied one after another. Many influential people afraid of Takeda, and disappointed to Ieyasu. To stoped this flow, Ieyasu attacked Shingen troops, but lost and lost. Finally, he hold in Hamamatsu castle.
After occupied almost Hamamatsu, Shingen went to west to attacked Mikawa. If he occupied Mikawa, Ieyasu lost his authority and be alone, because Mikawa was Ieyasu’s birthplace and important for Nobunaga too. And Shingen want to preserved troops until fought to Nobunaga, so he ignore Hamamatu castle.
Wat is Nobunaga doing ? Did he send reinforcement to Ieyasu ?
In this time, Nobunaga fought to many enemy. So he could send only 3,000 soldiers……
In this time, Shingen has serious disease. But he used this situation effectively. He made rumor ” Shingen has sirious disease, he is feeling rushed”.
Ieyasu went out from the castle, and attacked Shingen main troops. But, Shingen was ready for battle already. Ieyasu was tricked.
In 1573, battle of Mikatagahara began. This battle was only 2 hours, Ieyasu lost over 3,000 soldiers and lost many vassals. Some of them become decoy to protect Ieyasu from Takeda’s chase.
Was Ieyasu’s movement reckless ?
There are various views about this movement. I think, he thought “It is better to fight and lose than do not anything and lose as Daimyo”.
The position of Daimyo is difficult.
The battle of Mikatagahara was serious defeated for Ieyasu. But Shingen’s serious disease was fact and he withdrew on the way. In 13 May 1573, Shingen was sudden death. 51 years.
Battle of Ieyasu vs Takeda settled in Nagashino 1575.
If Shingen was good health…..
In this time, Takeda was strongest time. Did Nobunaga win…?
In 1586, Ieyasu moved from Hamamatsu to Suruga(Shizuoka castle). After that, Ieyasu’s vassal lived Hamamatsu castle. In this time, Ishigaki and Tenshu built (Now tenshu is rebuilt in 1958).
Daimyo who lived in Hamamatsu castle, many of them successful. So this castle is called “Successful castle”.
