It is born in Sapporo Hokkaido, and made in here and there.
In Meiji era, Japanese culture incorporates Europe and American culture. Beer is one of the factor of them. Domestic production of beer was an important business for Meiji Japan, because it is proof of developed country.
This attempt was also made in Hokkaido. Hokkaido has good soil and weather for wheat and hops which are raw materials for beer, so Hokkaido focused on beer business early. In 1877, first Sapporo bear was made in Sapporo and sold in Tokyo. In this time, removing yeast technology was poor, so bear bottle transport with ice in box to stop formation and the cork was fixed with a wire.
At the early Meiji era, bear bottle was imported from Europe.

Beer business was expanding rapidly in Meiji era. In 1906, to develop Japanese beer business in the world, Ebisu beer, Sapporo beer and Asahi beer were merged, it was called “Dainippon beer”. This company occupied about 70% share in Japan.
